A trend-based extension projects the size of the first impulse (A → B) from the end of the pullback (C): target = C + (B − A) × ratio. 1.0 is the classic measured move; 1.618 is the most-watched extended target.

How to calculate Fibonacci extensions

Target = C + (B − A) × ratio Ratios: 0.618, 1.0, 1.272, 1.618, 2.0, 2.618

The formula works for both directions: if A is above B (a down move), the targets project below C.

Worked example

  1. Price rallies from A = 100 to B = 200, then pulls back to C = 150.
  2. 1.0 extension (measured move) = 150 + 100 × 1.0 = 250.
  3. 1.618 extension = 150 + 100 × 1.618 = 311.80.

How to interpret Fibonacci extensions

Extensions turn a completed swing into objective profit targets. The 1.0 level (an equal-sized second leg) is the classic measured move; 1.618 is the most widely watched extended target. Use them to set take-profits and check the resulting reward with the risk/reward calculator.

Fibonacci Extension calculator FAQ

Retracement vs extension — what's the difference?

Retracements measure pullbacks within a swing; extensions project where the next leg may end beyond it.

What if price reaches 1.618 and keeps going?

Strong trends often reach 2.618. Trail your stop rather than assuming the level must hold.
