Bullish Percent Index62.4%neutral zone
BPI measures market breadth: the share of stocks in an index on point-and-figure buy signals. Readings above 70% suggest an overbought market; below 30% oversold. Reversals out of those zones are the classic signals.

How to calculate the Bullish Percent Index

BPI = Stocks on buy signals ÷ Total stocks in the index × 100

Worked example

  1. 312 of the 500 stocks in an index are on point-and-figure buy signals.
  2. BPI = 312 ÷ 500 = 62.4% — in the neutral zone.

How to interpret the Bullish Percent Index

Above 70% the market is considered overbought, below 30% oversold. The classic signals are reversals: BPI turning down from above 70% or up from below 30%. Because it counts stocks rather than weighting by size, BPI shows whether a rally is broad or driven by a few large names.
