Parabolic SAR106.51uptrend — SAR is the trailing stop below price
Trend flips13last 2 bars ago
Each bar the SAR moves towards price by the acceleration factor (starting at 0.02, rising by 0.02 on every new extreme up to 0.2). When price crosses the SAR the trend flips — which makes it a natural trailing stop.

How to calculate Parabolic SAR

Uptrend: SAR_next = SAR + AF × (EP − SAR) (EP = highest high of the trend) Downtrend: SAR_next = SAR − AF × (SAR − EP) (EP = lowest low of the trend) AF starts at 0.02, rises 0.02 at each new EP, capped at 0.20

Paste prices oldest-first, one value or row per bar — straight from a spreadsheet or CSV export. Use “Sample data” to try it instantly.

Worked example

  1. In an uptrend SAR = 98, EP = 105 and AF = 0.04.
  2. Next SAR = 98 + 0.04 × (105 − 98) = 98.28.
  3. If the low drops below the SAR, the trend flips and SAR jumps to the old EP.

How to interpret Parabolic SAR

Dots below price mean an uptrend, above price a downtrend. Because it always flips with price, SAR is a stop-and-reverse system: excellent in clean trends, expensive in ranges. Many traders only take SAR signals when ADX confirms a trend.

Parabolic SAR calculator FAQ

What do the acceleration settings do?

A larger step or maximum makes the SAR tighten faster — earlier exits, more whipsaws.

Can SAR be used as a trailing stop?

Yes — that's its main use. Move your stop to the SAR level each bar.
