VWMA = Σ(price × volume) ÷ Σ volume. When it sits above the plain SMA, the heaviest trading happened at higher prices — a sign that volume supports the up-move.

How to calculate a volume-weighted moving average

VWMA = Σ(Closeᵢ × Volumeᵢ) ÷ Σ Volumeᵢ (over n bars)

Paste prices oldest-first, one value or row per bar — straight from a spreadsheet or CSV export. Use “Sample data” to try it instantly.

Worked example

  1. Two bars: close 10 on volume 1, close 20 on volume 3.
  2. VWMA = (10 × 1 + 20 × 3) ÷ (1 + 3) = 17.5, versus an SMA of 15.

How to interpret a volume-weighted moving average

VWMA above the SMA means heavier volume occurred at higher prices — buyers backing the move. VWMA below the SMA in an uptrend suggests the rally is happening on light volume.

VWMA calculator FAQ

Is VWMA the same as VWAP?

No. VWAP accumulates from the start of a session; VWMA is a rolling n-bar average.
