How to calculate rate of change

ROC = (Close − Close n periods ago) ÷ Close n periods ago × 100

Paste prices oldest-first, one value or row per bar — straight from a spreadsheet or CSV export. Use “Sample data” to try it instantly.

Worked example

  1. Close today 110, close 12 bars ago 100 → ROC = (110 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = +10%.

How to interpret rate of change

Positive ROC means price is higher than n bars ago; crossing above zero signals momentum turning up. Divergence between ROC and price — price at a new high, ROC lower than at the previous high — warns that the move is losing speed.

Rate of Change calculator FAQ

Is ROC the same as momentum?

Momentum is often the price difference (Close − Close n ago); ROC expresses the same idea as a percentage, so it's comparable across instruments.

What lookback should I use?

9–14 for short-term trading, 20–25 for swing trading, 125–250 for long-term momentum.
